How Apostilles Work for Fort Worth Documents

Texas documents are apostilled by the Texas Secretary of State in Austin. Vital records need a certified copy first, from Texas Vital Statistics or the county clerk where the record was filed; for most Fort Worth births, marriages and deaths that is the Tarrant County Clerk. Documents you sign yourself, such as a power of attorney or single status affidavit, are notarized before they are filed. FBI background checks are federal and go to the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.

Aerospace, Airlines and AllianceTexas: Fort Worth's International Side

Much of Fort Worth’s international paperwork traces back to aviation and freight. Tarrant County’s economic development office lists Lockheed Martin as the county’s largest employer, followed by DFW International Airport, and also names Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base, BNSF Railway, Alcon Laboratories, American Airlines Group and Bell among major employers. American Airlines Group is headquartered in Fort Worth.

On the city’s north side, AllianceTexas surrounds Perot Field Fort Worth Alliance Airport. The Texas Comptroller describes it as a 27,000-acre development with more than 500 resident companies, including a FedEx regional sort hub and an Amazon Air regional hub, and the whole port is covered by Foreign Trade Zone No. 196. Recent arrivals named by the Comptroller include Embraer and Gulfstream.

For Fort Worth households and businesses, that translates into requests such as:

  • Marriage and birth certificates for families transferring to overseas plants, bases or partner airlines.
  • Powers of attorney and company resolutions for foreign suppliers, distributors and customs brokers.
  • Degree records and employment letters for engineers and mechanics taking contracts abroad.
  • Personal records for Navy and Air Force Reserve families attached to NAS JRB Fort Worth.

Where Tarrant County Issues Birth and Death Certificates

The Tarrant County Clerk’s Vital Records division runs several counters that Fort Worth residents can use. All share one information line, 817-884-1550, and list hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

When Tarrant County is the local registrar, the clerk issues a full reproduction of the original birth certificate, which is the version most foreign offices expect. For births registered elsewhere in Texas, the clerk can supply only an abstract, and the county’s own form warns that an abstract may not be suitable for some purposes. The current fee schedule is a $22 non-refundable search fee plus $23 per certified birth copy; death records carry a $20 search fee and $21 for the first copy.

Copies go to the person named or an immediate family member. Anyone else must show a documented direct and tangible interest. Also keep the Secretary of State’s five-year rule in mind: older certified copies are refused, so order new ones before filing.

Copies of Divorce Decrees from the Family Law Division

Divorce, custody and adoption files from Tarrant County district courts are kept by the District Clerk’s Family Law Division at 200 E. Weatherford, Third Floor, Fort Worth (817-884-1265).

  • Cost: $1 per page for certified paper copies, plus a $5 certification and seal fee.
  • Case number: include it, or a $5 records research fee is added.
  • By mail: address the request to Family Court Records at the Weatherford Street address and enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope. The clerk does not take personal checks and does not ship by FedEx.
  • By email: requests with the party names can go to TCDCRecords@tarrantcountytx.gov.

Ask for the paper certified copy with the clerk’s seal. That seal and signature are what the state checks before it attaches the apostille.

TCU, Texas Wesleyan and Fort Worth's Professional Schools

Tarrant County’s education listing names a long roster of schools, and several are inside Fort Worth: Texas Christian University, Texas Wesleyan University, UNT Health Science Center, Texas A&M University School of Law, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Tarleton State University’s Fort Worth locations and Tarrant County College.

Graduates of these schools tend to need apostilles for three reasons: teaching English or ministry work abroad, licensing in health professions, and admission to foreign graduate programs. In each case the starting point is the registrar.

  1. Ask the registrar for a notarized copy of your diploma or a notarized statement attached to an official transcript. TCU’s Office of the Registrar is in The Harrison, Suite 1300, 3101 Bellaire Drive North (817-257-7237).
  2. Confirm the notary is commissioned in Texas, since the state can only verify its own notaries.
  3. Send the notarized record to us unopened if the school seals it in an envelope.

Fort Worth Addresses Beyond Tarrant County

Fort Worth’s city limits stretch into Denton, Johnson, Parker and Wise counties. Neighborhoods near AllianceTexas, for example, may fall in Denton County. Vital records follow the place of the event, not the mailing address, so a birth or marriage recorded in one of those counties comes from that county clerk or from Texas Vital Statistics in Austin.

Some Fort Worth documents never touch a county office at all:

  • FBI background checks, often needed for overseas work visas, carry a federal apostille from the U.S. Department of State. Our FBI apostille page explains that process.
  • Federal records such as naturalization certificates follow federal rules, not the Texas process.
  • Countries outside the Hague Convention require embassy legalization. Our authentication service covers that route.

Mailing Fort Worth Documents to Us

Fort Worth clients work with our Houston office by mail and courier. Once we confirm the destination country, we check that each record is a recent certified copy or properly notarized, complete Texas Form 2102, and submit it to the Secretary of State’s Authentications Unit at 400 West 15th Street in Austin with the state’s $15 per-document fee. The finished apostille returns to your Fort Worth address or ships straight to the foreign recipient.
