Greece Apostille Service

Apostille Request Form

Greek-American families use apostilled U.S. documents to register births and marriages with a Greek municipality (dimotologio), which is often the first step toward Greek citizenship by descent and a Greek passport. Property owners and heirs need powers of attorney and death certificates for Greek notaries and courts, and people buying property or opening bank accounts need documents for a Greek tax number (AFM).

Greece has been a Hague Convention member since 1985. U.S. documents are apostilled by the state that issued them, or by the U.S. Department of State for federal records. Greek consulates in the U.S. don’t apostille U.S. documents.

Does Greece Accept Apostilles?

Yes. Greek municipalities, notaries and courts accept apostilled U.S. documents, usually together with an official Greek translation.

Documents Most Often Apostilled for Greece

  • Birth and marriage certificates for municipal registration and citizenship by descent.
  • Divorce decrees, which may need recognition by a Greek court.
  • Powers of attorney (plirexousio) for property, inheritance and AFM applications.
  • Death certificates for inheritance.
  • Degrees for recognition and employment.

Greek Translation

Greek authorities usually require an official Greek translation, made by the Translation Service of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs or certified by a Greek lawyer. Arrange this after the apostille, following your Greek lawyer’s advice.
