Why Cheyenne cannot apostille your FBI background check
The Wyoming Secretary of State issues the state’s apostilles from the Herschler Building East, 122 W 25th Street, in Cheyenne. Its documents have to be certified by a Wyoming official, such as the State Registrar or a Clerk of Court, or notarized by a Wyoming notarial officer. Typical examples are birth and death certificates, marriage licenses, divorce decrees, adoption documents, powers of attorney, diplomas and transcripts.
An FBI Identity History Summary carries the signature of a federal official, not a Wyoming one. For federal documents, the Secretary of State’s apostille page sends applicants to the U.S. Department of State Office of Authentications in Washington, DC. That is the office that apostilles FBI background checks.
Two points worth knowing before you start:
- A Wyoming DCI background check does not include the FBI. The Division of Criminal Investigation in Cheyenne runs fingerprint-based checks of Wyoming criminal history, along with the Western Identification Network states: Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington. DCI states that this does not include an FBI record check and that an individual who wants one must contact the FBI directly. A consulate asking for an FBI or national check will not accept the DCI result in its place.
- Do not plan around a counter visit in Cheyenne. The Secretary of State handles in-person apostille requests by appointment only, and that service is for Wyoming documents. For an FBI check there is nothing to drop off in Cheyenne at all.
For Wyoming vital records, court documents or notarized papers, see state apostille services.
How it works from Wyoming
- Fingerprints where you live. A police department, sheriff’s office or fingerprinting vendor can roll an ink FD-1164 card. You can also register on the FBI’s eDO site and have electronic prints taken at a participating U.S. Post Office. Then request the FBI Identity History Summary and pay the $18 FBI fee.
- The FBI answers. Your result is a PDF showing the FBI watermark and a division official’s signature.
- Email the PDF. Add a scan of your passport photo page. We confirm that the name and date of birth line up before we file.
- Office of Authentications. We complete Form DS-4194 and our Herndon, Virginia office hand-carries your request to the Department of State. An FBI result needs no DOJ certification beforehand. It goes straight in.
- FedEx home. Delivery to any Wyoming address, or by FedEx or DHL to an address in another country.
Apostille Authentications has no office in Wyoming and does not take fingerprints in the state. Our part starts when we receive your FBI PDF.

Where we serve Wyoming clients
All of Wyoming, by email and FedEx. That means Cheyenne and Laramie in the southeast, Casper in the center of the state, Gillette and Sheridan in the northeast, Rock Springs and Evanston along Interstate 80, and Jackson, Cody and Riverton to the west. Since the document travels by email on the way in, a rancher outside Lander and a student in Laramie start on the same footing.
Why Wyomingites need an apostilled FBI check
Common destinations for our Wyoming clients include Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama for retirement and residency, and Australia for work visas. South Korea and Japan require an apostilled FBI check for teaching visas, and Spain and Colombia ask for it with study and residency applications.
For Spanish-speaking countries you will usually need a Spanish translation as well. Certified translation can be included in the order. Many immigration offices reject FBI checks older than 3 to 6 months, so time the fingerprinting to your move.

FAQ
Can the Wyoming Secretary of State apostille an FBI background check?
No. The office in Cheyenne apostilles documents certified by a Wyoming official or notarized by a Wyoming notarial officer. For federal documents it refers applicants to the U.S. Department of State.
How fast is an expedited FBI apostille in Wyoming?
10 business days from the date your FBI result reaches us. Standard service runs 7–8 weeks.
Does a Wyoming DCI background check count as an FBI check?
No. The Division of Criminal Investigation says its check covers Wyoming and the Western Identification Network states and does not include an FBI record check. It is useful abroad only if a state-level record was requested.
I live in Casper or Jackson. Do I need an appointment in Cheyenne?
No. Appointments at the Secretary of State are for Wyoming documents. An FBI apostille involves no visit to Cheyenne, and we have no Wyoming office. It is handled by email and FedEx.
My name on the FBI result does not match my passport. What now?
Tell us before filing. We compare the two documents first, since a mismatch in name or date of birth can cause the foreign authority to turn the check away.
