Marriage licenses at the Caddo Parish Clerk of Court
The Caddo Parish Clerk of Court works from Room 103 of the Caddo Parish Courthouse, 501 Texas Street in downtown Shreveport. Its marriage license page says an applicant born outside the United States must bring a certified copy of the birth certificate from the place of birth and, if that certificate is not in English, an English translation that includes a sworn declaration of translation. The clerk also asks for a valid, unexpired passport or an unexpired visa with a U.S. issued Form I-94.
Because the clerk asks for a sworn declaration, tell us the translation is for a Caddo Parish marriage license. When a translation has to be notarized for Louisiana, we hire a notary commissioned in Louisiana to notarize the translator’s statement.
| Marriage license fee | $32, includes one certified copy |
|---|---|
| Extra certified copy | $6.55 each |
| Marriage license hours | Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. |
| Marriage department phone | 318-226-6789 |
Birth and death certificates in Caddo Parish
The same clerk’s office issues Louisiana birth certificates, and death certificates registered since July 9, 2012. The Louisiana Department of Health lists the clerk of court price for a long-form birth certificate at $34 and for a death certificate at $26. If you plan to send one of these records abroad, order a fresh certified copy first, then have it translated into the language of the receiving country if that country asks for it.
Courts that serve Shreveport
State cases for Caddo Parish are heard by the First Judicial District Court at the parish courthouse. Shreveport City Court is at 1244 Texas Avenue. Federal cases go to the Tom Stagg United States Court House, 300 Fannin Street, the Shreveport division of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana, which covers Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, Claiborne, DeSoto, Red River, Sabine and Webster parishes.
The Louisiana Supreme Court’s bench card on interpreters says courts provide interpreters free of charge in civil and criminal proceedings, choosing certified interpreters first and registered interpreters second. It also limits sight translation of documents during a proceeding to one page. Ask your attorney or the clerk how a longer foreign-language exhibit should be filed.
Immigration filings from Shreveport
Federal rule 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) requires any foreign-language document sent to USCIS to come with a full English translation that the translator has certified as complete and accurate, plus the translator’s certification of competence to translate into English. Our certificate of accuracy is written to carry both statements. USCIS decides each case, so we cannot promise acceptance.
Transcripts for LSU Shreveport and Centenary College
LSU Shreveport states that all international credentials for admission must arrive as a course-by-course evaluation from an approved agency, such as a member of NACES or AICE. Centenary College of Louisiana says any document not in English must be translated and evaluated by an international credentials evaluation service. Check with the evaluator you choose before ordering a translation, since some accept outside certified translations and some do their own.
Sending a Shreveport document for a Louisiana apostille
Louisiana apostilles are issued by the Secretary of State’s Commissions Division in Baton Rouge, not in Shreveport. The office authenticates the signatures of Louisiana notaries, clerks and deputy clerks of court, judges and the registrar of vital records. The fee is $20 per document, or $10 for adoption papers. Mail requests need a written note naming the destination country, a daytime phone number and a prepaid return courier envelope. We can help you prepare the request.
