What Seattle schools publish about translated transcripts

Admissions offices set their own wording, and it differs from campus to campus.

  • University of Washington. For international students sending final transcripts, UW says all transcripts must be accompanied by an official English translation in the same format as the original. To be official, the translation must be stamped as official by the school or certified as accurate by a certified translator.
  • Seattle University. International undergraduate applicants must send transcripts from all secondary and post-secondary schools attended, including certified English language translations of each transcript. Unofficial documents may be used for the admission decision; official documents are required after admission.
  • Seattle Colleges. International Programs asks underage applicants for original and English-translated copies of high school transcripts. Applicants bringing dependents must provide original and translated copies of the marriage certificate for a spouse or the birth certificate for children.

Court filings in King County Superior Court

King County Superior Court sits at the King County Courthouse, 516 3rd Avenue, Seattle, WA 98104, with further locations at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent and the Judge Patricia H. Clark Children and Family Justice Center at 1211 E. Alder Street in Seattle.

The court’s Interpreter Services office provides interpreters in more than 160 languages for hearings, trials and other court events at no cost. Its page covers spoken interpreting and does not offer translation of your own documents. We found no King County local rule that sets a format for translated exhibits, so ask the clerk or your attorney what the judge expects before you order.

Consulates in Seattle and driver license translations

Several foreign governments keep consular offices in Seattle. These three publish their addresses on official sites:

  • Consulate-General of Japan. 701 Pike Street, 10th floor, Seattle Convention Center, Seattle, WA 98101
  • Consulate General of India. Federal Reserve Building, 1015 2nd Avenue, Suite 100 and 1100, Seattle, WA 98104, its address since April 1, 2025. It serves Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota and Washington.
  • Consulate General of Canada. 1501 4th Ave, Suite 600, Seattle, WA 98101
  • Japanese and Taiwanese driver licenses. The Washington Department of Licensing says licenses from Japan and Taiwan require a translated certification, and it sends drivers to the Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle (206-682-9107) or the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Seattle (206-441-4586 ext. 311). That certification comes from those offices, not from a translation company.

From Seattle to a Washington apostille

Apostilles are not issued in Seattle. The Washington Secretary of State handles them by mail at PO Box 40234, Olympia, WA 98504-0234, and in person at its Western Regional Branch, 243 Israel Rd SE, Tumwater, WA 98501. The fee is $15.00 per document, and standard requests are typically processed in 7 to 10 business days. Same day counter service costs an added $150 for the first 10 documents.

A King County birth certificate or a certified copy from the Recorder’s Office can go to the Secretary of State as issued. A translation is a personal document, so the state’s guidance calls for notarization by a Washington State notary before an apostille request.
