The Jefferson Parish rule on translated birth certificates
The clerk’s marriage license page sets out what people born outside the United States must bring. Naturalized citizens show a Certificate of Naturalization. Others bring a certified birth certificate and a valid passport or a visa with Form I-94. The page then says: ‘If the birth certificate is not in English, provide a certified translation. The translator must include a sworn statement of fluency and accuracy.’ The license fee is $27.50.
Let us know your translation is for this purpose. If the translator’s statement has to be notarized for Louisiana, a notary commissioned in Louisiana is hired to do it.
Birth and death certificates close to Metairie
Through a partnership with the Louisiana Bureau of Vital Records, the Jefferson Parish Clerk prints certified birth and death certificates at First Parish Court on David Drive, at Second Parish Court in Gretna and at Juvenile Court in Harvey. All three are walk-in only. A birth certificate costs $34, a birth certificate with birth card $48 and a death certificate $26, paid by cash, check or money order. The clerk asks you to arrive before 4:00 p.m. if the record may date from before 1983.
Schools and families
Jefferson Parish Schools runs an ESL program through its Office of Multilingual Learning. The district says parents are given information in their native language and lists translation of school documents and interpretation assistance among its services, with materials in Spanish, Arabic, Vietnamese, French Creole, Chinese, Uzbek and Korean. For the district’s own notices, contact that office at 504-349-7776. Certified translations of records from another country, such as transcripts or vaccination records, are a separate matter that you can order from us.
Immigration and federal court filings
Any foreign-language document filed with USCIS must, under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), be accompanied by a full English translation that the translator certifies as complete and accurate, together with a certification that the translator is competent to translate into English. Our certificate of accuracy covers both points. No translation company can guarantee how USCIS will rule on a filing.
The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana sits at 500 Poydras Street, New Orleans, where valid picture ID is required to enter the building. In Louisiana state courts, interpreters are provided without charge to the parties, drawn first from the Supreme Court’s list of certified interpreters.

Apostilles for Jefferson Parish documents
Louisiana issues apostilles only through the Secretary of State’s Commissions Division in Baton Rouge. The office authenticates signatures of Louisiana officials, including clerks and deputy clerks of court, notaries and the registrar of vital records, at $20 per document or $10 for adoption documents. Countries outside the Hague Convention receive a certificate of authentication instead.
Metairie residents can use the weekday walk-in hours, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. except state holidays, or mail the document with a written request stating the destination country, a daytime phone number and a prepaid return courier envelope. We can help prepare the request and translate the document if the destination country requires it.
