University of Louisville rules on foreign transcripts
The University of Louisville publishes specific translation wording. Its undergraduate international application requirements state that transcripts issued by schools outside the United States require notarized, ATA-certified translation. Transfer applicants also need a course-by-course evaluation of foreign college transcripts, and the university names World Education Services, Educational Credential Evaluators or any current NACES member.
The Graduate School says applicants who attended universities outside the United States must submit a credential evaluation, and that credentials not issued in English need certified translations along with the originals. Tell us which office you are applying to so the translation and notarization match, and confirm the current rule with admissions.
Jefferson County records and where they come from
Louisville and Jefferson County share one merged government, and records are split between county and state offices.
- Marriage records. The Jefferson County Clerk keeps marriage licenses. Copies are requested from 527 W. Jefferson Street, Room 100-A, Louisville, KY 40202. A certified copy is $5 in person or $6 by mail, and the clerk offers an online search for licenses issued after 1992.
- Birth and death certificates. These are not issued in Louisville. The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness says it has no birth or death certificates on file. Application forms are available at 400 East Gray Street, and the certificate itself comes from the Kentucky Office of Vital Statistics in Frankfort ($10 for a birth certificate, $6 for a death certificate).
- Records before 1911. The city refers these requests to the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives in Frankfort.
Courts serving Louisville, and interpreters
Kentucky’s courts provide interpreters at no cost to people with limited English proficiency through the Office of Language Access, and you ask for one through the court handling your case. That covers spoken proceedings. If you need to file a foreign-language document, ask the clerk or your attorney what kind of translation the court expects.
