Brazil Apostille Service
Apostille Request Form
Brazil joined the Hague Apostille Convention in August 2016, which ended the old requirement to legalize U.S. documents at a Brazilian consulate. Now a U.S. document for Brazil needs an apostille from the state that issued it, followed in most cases by a translation into Portuguese by a sworn public translator.
Brazilian families in the U.S. use apostilled documents to register a U.S. marriage at a Brazilian cartório, to register children born in the U.S. as Brazilian citizens, to update civil status for a CPF or bank, and to handle property and inheritances. U.S. professionals and companies need degrees and corporate documents for work visas and business registration.
Does Brazil Accept Apostilles?
Yes. Since August 14, 2016, Brazil accepts apostilled documents from other Convention members, including the U.S. Brazilian consulates no longer legalize U.S. documents.
Documents Most Often Apostilled for Brazil
- Marriage certificates to record a U.S. marriage (transcrição) at a cartório in Brazil.
- Birth certificates for registering children as Brazilian citizens.
- Divorce decrees, which may also need recognition by Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice (STJ) in some cases.
- Powers of attorney (procuração) for property and bank matters.
- Degrees and transcripts for work visas and recognition.
- Corporate documents for Brazilian company registration.
Portuguese Sworn Translation
Brazilian offices generally require a Portuguese translation by a tradutor público juramentado (sworn public translator) registered in Brazil. Translations made in the U.S. are usually not accepted for official filings, so arrange the translation in Brazil after the apostille.
